On the Road to Non-Dairy Products

Hello everyone!

From http://www.treehugger.com; Kabsik Park, CC.

I haven't been able to update you on my health adventure in a while. Aside from training to run a 5K (I have a blog post alllllll about that! ha!), I have recently had to stop eating dairy.

I know. I was sad at first. I mean. I REALLY LOVE CHEESE.

Then, I started reading articles about how humans aren't even supposed to drink milk! Our bodies aren't designed to drink cow's milk, only human milk. So that means everything that's made with cow's milk isn't supposed to be in our system, either! (http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-food/dairy-industry.aspx, http://www.notmilk.com/kradjian.html, http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/food-nutrition/facts/environmental-health-reasons-dairy.htm).

Now, what began this realization that I couldn't have dairy anymore? Well, it started after I finished a perfectly nice glass of MILK. My tummy hurt so bad. :( I just sort of felt drained and sick after. I thought that it was just me and not the milk, so I tried it again the next night. Nope. Tummy hurt again. I started to think I might not need to drink milk anymore. What about other dairy products, then? Well, after these tummy aches began after drinking milk, I started to pay attention to what my body would do after I ate dairy. I noticed my tummy hurt after I ate ice cream, and if I ate a cheesy dish. I used to become confused when I would feel so awful after eating just a small bit of my dinner, but suddenly everything made sense!

Now, has it been hard to cut dairy out of my health equation? Yes.
Cheese was actually the easiest thing. Ice cream not so much. The funny part was, I didn't really crave ice cream until AFTER I couldn't have it anymore. Go figure.

The thing is, it's easier to cut this stuff out of my diet than to feel the way it makes me feel. I really don't like feeling sick and sluggish. Those two thing affect how I write. If I'm not feeling my best, I cannot write my best.

So, anyone else had to cut something out of their diet in order to make themselves feel better?

  1. Goat's milk is available at most grocery stores, and it's much more similar to human milk than to cow milk (which is anti-intuitive because of how the animal looks). You can feed it to babies before they're one year old, because it won't just knot their stomach up. Anyway, you could still eat goat cheese if you don't want to give milk products up altogether!

    1. I have read that! I will look for goat cheese next time I'm at the store. I completely forgot about that! I did find some non-dairy cheese that was pretty decent. LOL. I'm okay with not drinking milk, though if I ever get an awesome blender, I want to make smoothies for breakfast, so I may have to start looking for goats milk! Thanks, Laura!!

  2. I'm cutting out carbs. It's so no fun, because apparently carbs are thing that makes everything taste good.

Good luck with cutting out dairy. I don't think I'd be able to do it.

  3. Goat's milk and cheese seem to be everywhere so I don't think you're the only one with a problem. However, just to be sure there's a problem, I'd have a talk with my doctor before cutting stuff out/making a change. But I feel for you . . . I'm a total cheese freak! Good luck! (Oh, I can't have even a sip of red wine. The tannins tear my stomach up. It's awful!)

    1. I work with a friend who went to the doctor for it. She said he told her the real test is drinking milk on an empty stomach. I'm too afraid of that! LOL. I feel for you! I love red wine!

  4. I don't consume much dairy either, because while it doesn't necessarily make my tummy hurt, it doesn't make me feel right. Instead of ice cream I tend to have sorbet instead. We have this yummy brand called Weis here, they do mango, lemon and berries flavours of sorbet. It's delish. I still do have some ice cream occasionally. But now if I try to have cow's milk in a coffee or tea, it tastes wrong - almost too watery or something. I have soy milk, which I know is not many people's cup of tea, but it works for me. And soy hot chocolate is still one of my fave drinks ever, if done well.

    1. Sorbet is an AWESOME idea!! Why in the world didn't I think of that?!? Man, now I want some. LOL. I'll have to remember soy hot chocolate. Christmas will be here soon (haha!) and that's my favorite!

  5. If I cut out milk, I'd just end up drinking more soda! Lol. But that's great that you're feeling better. :)

    1. Boo soda!! LOL. I stopped drinking soda over a year ago. I just stopped liking it really. Now it's tea and water! It gets kinda boring though.

  6. I made the decision yesterday to never drink soda again. It's been making me kind of sick every time I drank it for months, but yesterday it gave me terrible pains. Whatever, I like water.

    1. YAY!! Good luck!!
Water is cool. It gets meh sometimes, but once you start drinking more water, you really notice when you're dehydrated!

  8. Ohhhh... I'm so sorry you've had to cut out dairy! About a year ago, I cut out all gluten. It was hard--still is sometimes, but I've felt so much better.

    1. Oh no! Gluten is a tough one...but that'll make you feel awful if you have the allergy!

  9. Dagger to the heart! No cheese? I would die. I would literally die. No, actually, I would dig my own grave and dive in. Give me cheese or give me death!

  10. I have a lactose intolerance, but it's odd. I can manage any of the dairy that has the microbes...like cheese and cottage cheese, but ice cream, pop tarts, and peanut butter Captain Crunch doubles me over!
